Sutures and Silk

Who is Alex?
Alex Castillo is a 23-year-old artist earning a Bachelor of Arts in New Media from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, they come from a mixed-race Asian and Hispanic background, an identity that deeply informs their creative practice and ongoing exploration of self-actualization, cultural belonging, and emotional complexity.
Specializing in animation, with a focus on stop motion, Castillo uses storytelling as a tool to examine themes often considered taboo, including mental health, trauma, grief, and identity. Their work blends elements of the macabre and the whimsical to create striking, metaphorical worlds that invite viewers to reflect on their emotional traumas. Drawing inspiration from horror, music, and a deep love for animals, they create art that comforts, unsettles, and encourages honest conversations.

Through narrative short films, animated vignettes, and character-driven visual design, Castillo aims to destigmatize mental health and offer space for vulnerability and healing, especially for those who often feel unseen or misunderstood.
Personal Statement
My work centers on exploring the emotional complexities of the human experience, with a focus on mental health, trauma, grief, and the often unseen impact of abuse and displacement. As a New Media artist earning my Bachelor's degree, I specialize in animation, particularly stop motion, and use the tactile, intimate nature of my puppetry to tell stories that are both deeply personal and socially conscious. I am passionate about using art to confront difficult themes head-on, opening conversations around subjects that are often treated as taboo, such as depression, emotional abuse, and mourning.
A driving force in my creative process is the desire to destigmatize mental health and to give voice to the internal landscapes of those who feel silenced or misunderstood. My love for the horror genre and the macabre informs much of my visual language. I often pair unsettling imagery with delicate, whimsical aesthetics to strike a balance between beauty and discomfort. An approach that mirrors the emotional contradictions many people carry. Through metaphor-rich storytelling, such as in Love Bites, which critiques the manipulation and devastation within abusive relationships through insect allegory, or in my collaborative short on the impact of Hurricane Helene on Asheville’s unhoused communities, I aim to make the invisible visible.
Beyond my artistic work, I bring strong leadership experience and a background in sales, customer service, and event planning skills that allow me to build collaborative, emotionally safe environments where creative teams can thrive. Recognized for community leadership and a commitment to inclusive storytelling, I approach each project with both compassion and clarity, using my voice to illuminate what too often goes unspoken.
